AMOLED
AMOLED (Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode) screens are an evolution of the OLED screens which have been around since the early 1990′s. OLED’s are basically a sandwich of two transparent electrodes, with a layer of organic compound between them. When a current is passed through the organic compound it emits light, removing the need for a separate backlight. OLED’s can therefore be thinner and lighter than traditional LED’s and can display deeper blacks and a higher contrast range.
The Active Matrix part of the name is the way that the individual pixels of a display behave. With active matric adressing, each pixel has a switch mechanism which keeps it in a set state whilst the other pixels are being updated. In simple terms, this allows for a much brighter and clearer display than normal OLED.
The first touchscreen AMOLED displays were produced by Samsung in early 2010, when they combined the touch sensor and the OLED into one component. The touch sensor is just 0.001mm thick. AMOLED displays can be found on smartphones such as the HTC Desire and Samsung's latest additions to their smartphone range, the Galaxy S II and the Infuse 4G, both feature the new Super AMOLED Plus screen technology. Retina is not a technology!!! IPS is a technology in LCD and AMOLED and LCD all use TFTs!!
